governor o'malley and a deadly celebration. a bicyclist takes down the driver who hit and killed the 24-year-old woman, who has been out to celebrate her birthday. >> reporter: i'm lindsey mastis. a young woman lost her life. she was celebrating her 24th birthday. police say that she was getting out of the back of the vehicle and another vehicle came up and hit her and then really threw her into the back of this car. >> reporter: she died a short time later. she had been celebrating her 24th birthday. a witness on the bike saw what happened and took off after the suv. >> a bicyclist, followed the striking vehicle. and they noticed the tag number and called police. >> reporter: montgomery county police tracked it down. they say that they found the suv in the parking garage. and a woman behind the wheel. the car was off and there were no keys in the ignition. but police say that the 30-year- old, davidson, is the allege

driver. and today, people hesitated, while walking by the area, she lost her life. >> it is a tragedy. >> and sometimes they don't come to the area or the road here. >> reporter: i'm bruce leshan in prince george's county, where president obama remains popular enough that democratic candidates are still inviting him to come out and to campaign for them. and in this case, it was governor martin o'malley and senator barbara. o'malley is an estimated 11 points up in the polls. and in this big concern, it's making sure that the democratic base is still fired up enough to get out and vote on november 2. >> if the republicans, and they say they want the keys back, and we've got to tell them. you can't have the keys back. because you don't know how to drive. [ cheering ] >> reporter: people here had to wait out in the warm autumn sun for hours for the president obama and about three dozen

people fainted. most of them were revived by sitting down and getting a class of water, but two had to be transported to the hospital. >> on capitol hill, on this ninth anniversary of the afghanistan war, the veterans are sending a message to congress and delivering this notice. they are saying stop sending the traumatized troops to the battlefield. >> veterans, many suffering from the post-traumatic stress and other disorders, speaking out against the war like the former marine. >> and you never, you know, find real life again in a lot of ways. there are moments where, you know, i don't know if you're here. >> reporter: the group iraq veterans estimate 20% of the troops serving overseas are traumatized. they served the second tour, after being diagnosed and a traumatic brain injury, after being hit by the roadside bomb in '06. >> i was in the drugs to help them sleep and a panic attack. my mission only worsened. and if they were sitting out or going back. >> and the senate investigators

say that the u.s. relies on contractors in afghanistan and they have actually helped to fund the taliban. the armed services committees say that they ended up supporting the insurgents because of the contractors that tend to not vet their local recruits. and while that means they could end up hiring the war lords and thugs. the remains of the maryland soldier killed in afghanistan, arrives here in the u.s. today. he died in the helicopter crash last saturday. the 29-year-old from frederick maryland, deployed a dozen times with eight tours in afghanistan. four more in iraq. and his parents and brothers were in georgia when his body arrived today. >> that is just the work in italy. >> i wish that they could meet him. it's amazing. >> yes. >> and he is just awesome. they love to help people. >> very joyceful for the men.

to greet areas. while that is set for saturday, he is survived by his pregnant wife and two children. and the federal aviation administration, now proposing the tougher flight rules for the helicopters. increasing the safety for those medical choppers. that's following a spike in the deadly accidents, like one near andrews air force base back in 2008. all air ambulances, traveling the electronic systems that could warn them on the air or on the ground. and the man already suspected of stabbing more than a dozen people in three states, including virginia, is facing still more charges. and live, they are accused of smashing in the car window when the parking lot of the michigan bar last july. they believe it might have been in retaliation for something that happened inside that bar. and so far, he faces charges, in six stabbings in michigan. but none in the stabbings that he is suspected of in virginia or ohio. well, don't be startled if you see a lot of the security on am

track tomorrow. this is all part of the high security exercise along national transit routes. the department of the homeland security out here for the exercises that have been planned for months. they are not connected to any specific terror threats. and come this time tomorrow, metro will be in the final stages of closing down. and the international monetary fund to hold their annual fall meeting. that also means for the road closures in the northeast headquarters. starting tomorrow, 7:00 p.m., the 18th, 19th, and the 20th streets will be closed between these streets and pennsylvania avenue. there will be some closings on g and h streets. i'm sorry, i said northwest.

and ehrlich voted to eliminate the department of education while serving in congress. but in the toughest of times, martin o'malley has made record investments in public schools, new school construction, and o'malley froze college tuition four years in a row. with martin o'malley, our children always come first. dawn stewart announced exactly where that rally to restore sanity is going to take place. talking about this on the comedy central program. but as surae chinn reports, stewart may have jumped the gun. >> they have yet to issue a permit for the rally to restore sanity, and his march to keep them alive. but if it does get approved, it will be staged right here with the capitol as their backdrop,

after the natural gas line, both opening up this morning. now, it took the crews almost four hours to put it on this leak. no injuries or damage report. but crews are checking the building in a four block radius to make sure that there is no gas build up inside. and a pizza shop celebrates the rebirth after that. violent explosion last year. that was the blast at the shopping center in maryland that have injured eight firefighters and a gas worker. luckily though, customers and employees have been evacuated just in time. well now, that pizza shop is back and they are paying tribute to the the folks who rushed to the rescue. >> just like a bomb to strike. >> and i have shown the love for them here to come to the

fire department. >> he thanks the fire department for saving his life and the lives of others on may 7, 2009. and that is when a natural gas e motion turned the pizza -- explosion turned the pizza shot into a pile of rubble. >> and they are coming back, they know it. but for the deficit. >> reporter: eight firefighters and one washington gas worker were hurt. but everybody survived. >> i actually came in and i went to burlington instead and heard that it exploded. >> no other customers or workers at the shopping center got hurt as firefighters safely evacuated them. >> it was like the movie. the explosion with the flames up in the air. i couldn't believe that. >> today, customers are enjoying the food and some actually think that it's gotten better. >> i don't need to go away from them now to come back. >> it's nicer in here. >> yes. >> and it's almost like a

little blessing in disguise. the food is better and nicer. >> reporter: and since everything is all better now, they want to say thank you. and they will offer free small pizzas to the firefighters and the paramedics on saturday at the grand reopening. >> more than 40 people had to be evacuate before the blast. the fire chief in prince george's county has been invited to see the dedication wall on saturday. an update on that toxic flood spill. now, we told you about this last night. people were worried that they could get to the river. well tonight, that's exactly what has happened. and officials are testing their water. every few hours to see if it is con tom nateed with the heavy metal. a reservoir broke down on monday, sending tons of flood through three villages. more people were killed. >> and a nice test at home. with using to store the coal here. that's the way they created the companies when they make electricity. and two years ago.

neighboring boone county. they have fired three workers, suspending nine others in the wake of the inspection. and as finish the miners, trapped almost half a mile down in chile, rescue crews, they now say that they should get there. but get this, saturday, the day after tomorrow, once that rescue shaft is finished, it could start as early as monday. two more arrived at the mine sight today in anticipation of getting the summers out of there. okay, topper is promising us all week long, this great weather and now it has finally begun. >> they get to hold their promise true to the forecast and first, we head into the weekend coming in on monday. just doesn't get better than this in washington and the fall. in fact, these are warmer temperatures than we have been for this time of the year. talking about near 80 degrees as soon as tomorrow and saturday. and i think that we will hit the 80s through next week. that'll be columbus day in through tuesday. if anything, a few clouds on sunday and maybe a little

cooler, lower the mid-7s. but there is nothing but sunshine to round out this workweek and to head into the weekend. we have dropped into the lower 70s and the 60s this morning. so it is mild. setting the northwest breezes too. allowing to cool off rather significantly too. this morning, it will with that way on friday morning. downtown, only 51 and 52. the warmest spot, quickly through the 50s. into the 60s. by the time we get through friday afternoon, we have 77 today. no reason that we shouldn't hit the exact same temperature tomorrow. not a degree or two warmer. here is how it looks over the region today. and the last of the storm system, way in the upper northeast system. they had a couple of clouds, those that have died off since they went out to sea. we see nothing here but sunshine into the forecast. and 71 right now, washington. so a lot are in the 60s, except for a few spots. and that's down all on the virginia side. everybody in maryland, pretty

much in the 60s. there is the sunset set for tonight. a lot of that back here on friday along with the warm temperatures. >> that friday forecast, going into saturday. and they do show the cloud covers on our outlook. and there is just one of them there. nothing really to see. i think it's bright sunshine over washington. on sunday, i bring a couple more clouds into the forecast on the future head. they don't show that. i'll put a few of them in. a little bit of the cooler reading to build it into the high temperatures. lows tonight, cool spots, normal spots. southwest west. north after you get the higher elevations, going downtown. off to the east, that's right around 50. not upper 40s. a beautiful day again on friday. a lot of the upper 70s. coming close to 80 degrees with the higher elevations that will hit that, blue ridge, mid to upper 70s in the appalachians, right around 70. i think as you go up there on the higher elevations, that's where you could hit the 80s. the seven-day forecast. one, two, three, four. and that's my best impersonation there. look at monday to count.

tonight, stunned. the reaction to the story on the house that burned down because they failed to pay a $75 fee to ensure the fire safety where he lived. they have not paid a fee that is seriously messed up. and they had this to add to the tragic story. life was lost. several dogs and the cats, parishing. it's one thing to let the house burn. most property could be replaced. but non-responding firefighters have no way to know if there were children, disabled adults, pets, etc., in that structure. and he calls the whole thing disturbing. our country bankrupt the firemen who can't put out a fire because someone didn't pay a $75 fee. and that has to do the right

thing. people say they don't want to pay more taxes, but the taxes pay for them. and everybody wants everything, but no one wants to pay. well you know what first, i was thinking like this was flood insurance. you know, you have to pay an advantage if you want to take that out there. on the other hand if you bring up the ability proof the kids trapped inside, it is hard to think that doing nothing would be an option. and then there was this on the supreme court that you heard about yesterday, involving the protesters on the baptist church and the father of the soldier, who said that their anti-gay demonstration at the funeral for his son, costing him great pain. and protecting the speech. no way. these people, they don't deserve the freedom of speech. they don't have any respect to the service men and women and their families that keep the countries safe. and they hate america, they should be put out of our country. >> well yeah, except for the fact that you don't get your constitutional rights, for being a nice person, do you? and that's why we call them
